Why Security Matters in Crypto
Cryptocurrency gives you financial freedom—but also full responsibility. Unlike banks, crypto has no password reset. That’s why securing your assets with a Ledger® hardware wallet is essential. Ledger stores your private keys offline, away from hackers and malware.
Step 1: Visit the Official Website
To begin securely, open your browser and type in the official address: www.ledger.com/start. This is the only verified source for Ledger setup and software. Bookmark it to avoid phishing websites in the future.
Step 2: Check Your Device Packaging
Before using your device, ensure the box is sealed and untampered. A genuine Ledger product will never come pre-set with a PIN or recovery phrase. If anything seems unusual, stop setup immediately and contact official Ledger support.
Step 3: Download Ledger Live
Ledger Live is the official app for managing your crypto with your Ledger device. Download it only from the official Ledger.com/start page. It is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android.
Step 4: Set Up Your Ledger Wallet
Connect your Ledger Nano S Plus or Nano X to your computer or mobile device. Follow the instructions on the device screen and in Ledger Live:
- Select “Set up as new device”
- Create a secure PIN code
- Write down your 24-word recovery phrase on the included recovery sheet
- Confirm the recovery phrase by selecting each word in order
Important: Never take a photo of your recovery phrase or store it digitally. Keep it offline and private, away from anyone else.
Step 5: Install Apps & Add Crypto Accounts
Inside Ledger Live, install the apps for the cryptocurrencies you want to manage (such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.). Then, add accounts to monitor balances and transactions securely.
Step 6: Securely Receive and Send Crypto
To receive cryptocurrency, generate a receiving address using Ledger Live and verify the address on your device before sharing it. To send crypto, start the transaction in Ledger Live and confirm it using your device.
Security Tips to Remember
- Never share your 24-word recovery phrase with anyone—not even with Ledger staff.
- Only use the official Ledger site to download apps or get updates.
- Always double-check web addresses and avoid unofficial sites.
- Update your device firmware and Ledger Live app regularly.
- Keep your recovery phrase stored offline in a secure, fireproof location.
